Eveningwear Evening Coat
The 1920s witnessed a resurgence in exoticism and its application to fashion, as portrayed in this embroidered silk evening coat.
Sketch and Garment Pairing: These sketches were chosen to pair with this evening coat because they share an element of Eastern inspired embellishment, have contrasting sleeves and/or hem, and have similar side closures.
Conservation Treatment: The green silk was shattering throughout the trim on the decorative panels of the coat and the original lining was in poor condition. Infills of China silk in similar color and weight were used in areas of loss and couched down with conservation stitches then enclosed by a layer of net. The original lining was too weak to be conserved, so it was left in place and covered with a new lining to minimize further losses to the lining and at the same time maintain the aesthetic appearance of the garment. Further conservation work included closing splitting seams, sewing and attaching a new tie, and securing the button loop that was broken off at the bottom.
Conservation treatment performed by Anya Andreeva.
